The Fourth Amendment applies to medical procedures when they are conducted by the government or its agents for the purpose of obtaining evidence in a criminal investigation. The Supreme Court has held that such procedures are searches within the meaning of the Fourth Amendment and must be reasonable under the circumstances. The reasonableness of a medical procedure depends on the balance between the individual’s privacy interests and the government’s legitimate interests in law enforcement.
